US –Foxwoods to drop MGM at Connecticut

By - 29 ta’ Ottubru 2013

Foxwoods Resort Casino is to end its partnership with MGM Resorts rebranding the MGM Grand at the Connecticut casino and removing the name from the hotel tower.

MGM spokesman Clark Dumont said MGM wants to avoid confusing consumers as it looks to win a licence to open a casino in Springfield, Massachusetts.  That licence would compete with Mohegan Sun’s plans to open a resort casino in the western Massachusetts town of Palmer.

Foxwoods President and CEO Scott Butera added that the renaming of the tower was part of a campaign to liven up the Foxwoods brand that will see renovations throughout the property.

“When we looked at the master plan for the resort and our current opportunities, it was obvious that the iconic brand of Foxwoods needed to be at the forefront of our transformation,” Mr. Butera said.

The two companies released a statement that read: “Today the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and MGM Resorts International announced the dissolution of their previous licensing agreement for the use of the MGM Grand brand at Foxwoods Resort Casino. The parties have agreed that there will be a six-month period for Foxwoods to transition from using the MGM Grand brand.”

The licensing agreement was signed in 2006 with the tower opening two years later at a cost of $700m.
